Why solar + EV is the household savings jackpot

Cheaper miles, worked out yourself

A typical EV travels about 3–4 miles per kWh. At the recent US average residential rate of roughly 18¢/kWh[3] that is about 4.5–6¢ per mile from the grid, and less from your own roof once the system is paid off. Compare it against your own car's cost per mile rather than trusting a headline number.

Soak up your midday surplus

Solar over-produces at midday when many cars sit idle at home. Daytime charging turns "exported for pennies" power into "fuel worth dollars."

A battery on wheels

Bidirectional (V2H/V2G) EVs can power your house during an outage or the evening peak, a growing capability worth planning for.

Rule of thumb (worked, not quoted): 12,000 miles a year ÷ 3.5 miles per kWh ≈ 3,400 kWh of charging. At roughly 1,300 kWh generated per kW of solar per year, that is about 2.6 kW of extra panels. Your mileage, efficiency and sunshine will shift this. Use it to start the conversation, not to size a purchase. See Solar Costs.
